Guide For Good Health of S.W of PA

Everyone tells us to drink water, from exercise instructors to Dr. Oz. But I have found that no one is telling us WHY! I started researching in depth the relationship between water and the lack of energy and pain.

Mayo Clinic states an adult loses about 6.3 cups of urine a day. You will lose an additional 1.5 Litres (4 cups )of water a day through breathing, sweating and bowel movements. Food usually accounts for 20 percent of your total fluid intake, so you will need to consume 2 Litres of water ( a little more than 8 cups) to replace the fluids lost.

Do not rely on the feeling of thirst as a guide for when to drink, by the time you feel thirsty , you may already be slightly dehydrated. Further, as you get older the body is less able to sense dehydration to send the brain signals of thirst.

What is the best way to manage this ‘drought condition?

A good start is to manage your intake of water-depleting drinks such as coffee, beer or beverages containing sugar. Once you drink one can of soft drink, you feel like you still need more, the body trapped in a never-ending cycle of craving hydration that simply cannot be met by consuming soft drinks. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea, while made up almost entirely of water, also contain caffeine. Caffeine found in soft drinks, coffee, and tea can act as a diuretic telling body to eliminate water thus preventing water from traveling to necessary locations in the body.

What your body truly craves is Water!

Make water the beverage of choice to ward off dehydration.

Follow these tips for better hydration:

Drink a glass of water with each meal and between each meal.

Hydrate before, during, and after exercise.

Substitute sparkling water for alcoholic drinks at social gatherings.

How does dehydration effect our body?

A Just a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25% to 30% loss of energy. An 11%+ drop in body fluids will cause death. A mere 2% drop can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic mental calculations and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as the computer screen. Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue.

An estimated 75% to 80% of people have mild, chronic dehydration: this is a scary statistic for a developed country where water is readily available through the tap or bottle.

Refreshing water! Plays a role in reducing the risk of certain diseases such as colon cancer, bladder cancer, and potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer. Adequate water intake will help prevent headaches, constipation, and kidney damage.

Our brain is over 75% water and controls each and every process that happens in the body. This control is maintained by sending and receiving electrical signals throughout the nervous system., which is nothing more than an elaborate system of tiny waterways. So the body, when it is lacking water, will do everything possible to prevent this ‘drought-like’ conditions from occurring. The strategy to conserve water is to pull water from the lungs to supply the brain which makes breathing more difficult.

Water suppresses the appetite and helps the body burn up stored fat.

The decrease in water causes the kidneys not to function properly. The kidneys in turn affects some of the water going to the liver. One of the functions of the liver is to metabolize fat into energy for the body. If the liver has to do some of the work of the kidneys then the liver can’t work on fat.

Can dehydration cause back and arthritis pain?

You may not know this but water plays an enormous part in your back and spine. Between the vertebrae lies a shock absorber disk. Each disk has two part: outer flexible tough ring with a gelatinous filling. This filling is mostly water. During the day, water is slowly squeezed out of the disks then at night the disks rehydrate themselves. With the fully hydrated disk, the outer ring bears 25% of the weight load while the inner filling supports 75%. If the inner filling is dehydrated, it can not support the load and the results in pain, swelling, and even ruptures of the outer shell of the disk.

Water is the one simple way to reduce back pain is to increase your daily intake of water. Throughout your day, simply stretch your spine forward and back helping to rehydrate your disks.

Arthritis simply means “joint inflammation” is the term for about 100 forms of arthritis. Waters important task is lubing up the joints for maximum and pain-free movement. The arthritis stuffiness and pain is a result of joints, not being cushioned with increased friction between the cartilage, water can aid by helping to lubricate and provide padding for these areas. When joints move, a suction occurs pulling water from the bone marrow into the joint—if there is water available. If not, joints can glide like they should.

Chances are, not long. The exercise is designed to simulate the pain a person with fibromyalgia often experiences daily.

Beginning tomorrow, Webb will host the first of a free three-part educational series on fibromyalgia in her home based business at 310 E. McMurray Road. Ensuing sessions will be held May 17 and 31, 2008. All sessions will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m.

One of the speakers will be Lisa Cousley of Castle Shannon, the person responsible for turning Webb into an advocate for those suffering from fibromyalgia, a chronic pain disorder that involves widespread musculoskeletal aches, pains, and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, fatigue and sleep disturbances.

When Cousley met Webb in 2002 – two years after Cousley was diagnosed with fibromyalgia- at the chiropractor’s office where Webb worked, she was walking with a cane, she couldn’t brush her hair, and she couldn’t bend over to shave her legs.

I think if I hadn’t met Margie, I probably wouldn’t be walking – Lisa Cousley

The biggest reward Webb received through the massage sessions was the day Cousley was able to raise her right arm, pull it over her head and touch her left ear.

“She had the biggest grin. She told me she owes me for giving her life back,” said Webb.

Webb cautions however, that miracles don’t happen overnight. Sometimes, she said, she was able to touch Cousley for only 20 seconds because of the severity of the pain, which Cousley likened to the flu.

“You know how you get when you have the flu, how your body feels? It’s like that, only magnified, every day. Some days it’s worse. There’s always some pain. You just learn to live with it,” said Cousley.

The way massage works for fibromyalgia patients is simple. Webb relies on touch to stimulate receptors in the skin, which in turn, hastens messages sent to the brain to reduce pain. In addition, by exercising the patients’ muscles fro them, Webb increases their body’s serotonin levels and releases more endorphins. Serotonin is a chemical that promotes communication between nerve cells and regulates many functions., including mood, appetite and sensory perception – all of which are affected by fibromyalgia; endorphins are natural substances that the brain releases to relieve pain.

“Massage gets muscles to release toxins into the bloodstream. I’m exercising muscles differently than you do,” Webb said.

And Cousley can notice a difference immediately.

“There is a tremendous difference how I feel the next week. I don’t feel like super woman, but I don’t feel like a rolled-up piece of aluminum foil, either.”

In addition to the benefits of massage therapy, the series will focus on body mapping of the 18 trigger points of fibromyalgia, exercise, supplements and chiropractic adjustment.

“There’s a lot people can learn. They don’t have to limit themselves. Basically, they don’t have to be victims of it…I used to garden from dawn until dusk. Obviously, I can’t do that anymore, but I can do a little at a time now.”
